Flats planned for Oldham Street gap site

Kempton Homes has submitted a planning application for 100 flats in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, designed by Hodder & Partners.
The site at 76-82 Oldham Street is currently a surface car park, but was formerly the Dobbins department store which was damaged by a fire in 2013 and then demolished.
Kempton is proposing two blocks on the site, delivering a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
The first building would be between four- and eight-storeys high with access off of Oldham Street, while the second block would be five storeys with an entrance on Spear Street.
The range of height would create a staggered frontage on the Oldham Street side, according to artist’s impressions of the project.
Kempton Homes is based in Altrincham.

Nice blocks. Oldham Street is a traditional street within one if Manchester’s more characterful areas. Development should respect that and it does.

It’s certainly in keeping with the area and what the NQ stands for. Can’t help to wonder whether they should have added a few more floors though.

If this does happen it would be good to see traditional retail units but a fear it will just end up full of fast food outlets . Do the planners not also realise this little town has its infastructer already stretched to its limits.

The design could be worse. It should be 4 or 5 storeys as the rest of the street is 4-5, otherwise it will look grossly out of place. Also there better not be a bunch of crap chain shops underneath it.
