First stage of Merseyway revamp gets underway

Work to redevelop Adlington Walk in Stockport starts this week, as the first stage in the regeneration of the 55-year-old Merseyway shopping centre.

Under the plans, Adlington Walk, which is a covered area off the main shopping mall linking to Chestergate and Stockport Old Town, will have a new stair and lift core providing access from the rooftop car park into a “hotel lobby”-style entrance, according to Stockport Council.

There will be revamped community facilities such as toilets, parent and child facilities, a play area and a quiet room, as well as public realm improvements, seating and a multi-faith prayer room.

The redevelopment was designed by AEW Architects and is being delivered by Graham Construction, which procured the job thorough the Procure Partnerships Framework.

It is the first in a package of works that will also see new shopfronts for many of the mall’s 90 retail units, as well as landscaping and other public realm improvements to overhaul Merseyway, with the project due to complete in 2022.

The works mean Adlington Walk will be temporarily closed until Autumn 2020.

Cllr David Meller, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “These fantastic new facilities will make a huge difference to the shopping centre and ensure the town centre is even more appealing to visitors.

“Along with Redrock, the revitalised Market Place and a constant stream of new restaurants, bars and shops choosing to set up business in Stockport, we’re creating a town centre we can all be proud of.”

Merseyway was built in 1965. CBRE manages the shopping centre on behalf of the council.
