Fire at £350m Royal Liverpool Hospital rebuild
Around 1,000 people were evacuated from Carillion’s Royal Liverpool University Hospital redevelopment yesterday afternoon after a small fire broke out on site.
Merseyside Fire & Rescue were called to the incident at 1.45pm, after an ambulance was requested for a person suffering from smoke inhalation.
According to a statement from the fire service, three fire engines attended the scene, and crews found a small fire involving some wooden hoardings at the first floor level, which had been extinguished by contractors. Three workmen suffered slight smoke inhalation, and one attended hospital for a precautionary check.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
The £350m Royal Hospital redevelopment in Liverpool city centre is due to complete in summer 2017. The old Royal Hospital building will then be demolished.
The new hospital will include a 40-bed critical care unit, 18 operating theatres and one of the largest emergency departments in the North West, with a CT scanner and special lifts for major trauma patients, which go straight to theatres.
No one at Carillion was available to comment at the time of publication.
