Final phase of £19m Blacon regen kicks off

A mixed-use scheme featuring apartments and a medical centre forms the final part of the Blacon Parade project in Chester, led by housing association Sanctuary Group and Cheshire West & Chester Council.

The scheme, designed by Liverpool-based architect Brock Carmichael, features a ground floor GP surgery and 16 affordable apartments on the upper floors of the three-storey block.

Work is underway and is expected to be completed by spring 2022.

First mooted in 2012, earlier phases of the £19m Blacon Parade included the construction of 26 homes, a 36-unit sheltered housing scheme, the refurbishment of several shops, and the 10,000 sq ft Parade Enterprise Office Centre, which comprises a library, community centre and offices.

The Parade Enterprise Centre is open and run by Avenue Services, a joint venture between Sanctuary Group and Cheshire West & Chester Council.

Sanctuary’s senior development manager Danielle Wrigley said: “I’m delighted to see the redevelopment of the final stage of The Parade beginning to take shape with the new GP surgery and health centre which, along with 16 apartments, will be a significant addition to the local area.

“This development further underlines Sanctuary’s ongoing commitment to Blacon and the wider Cheshire West and Chester region.”

Good news but a very long time in the making. Why do schemes such as this take so long to get off the ground, noting the landlord owns the majority of the wider estate?
