FEC targets 2021 for £1bn Northern Gateway start
Far East Consortium is aiming to start on site on the first phase of the £1bn Northern Gateway by early 2021, confirming the appointment of architect Buttress to deliver the designs for 330 homes in Collyhurst.
Collyhurst Village and Collyhurst South form the first phase of the £1bn Northern Gateway, alongside 630 apartments planned on the former Angelgate site, designed by Hawkins\Brown.
Around 330 homes are proposed for the area, including 130 council houses for social rent, with the remainder being family homes for sale. Buttress’ work on scheme was reported by Place North West earlier this week.
Some of the existing properties in Collyhurst Village will be demolished and rebuilt, with the residents affected given the option to move into one of the new-build council houses.
The draft business plan for these first phases of Northern Gateway is going before Manchester City Council’s executive next week. According to FEC, the design and planning process for Collyhurst is due to complete this year. 
The wider Northern Gateway project is a large-scale investment programme being delivered by the council in partnership with FEC, with architect Farrells leading on the masterplan. The concept is based on seven new and emerging neighbourhoods connected by green space.
The Gateway is earmarked to deliver 15,000 homes in the next 15 to 20 years and will include at least 3,000 affordable homes.
Cllr Suzanne Richards, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “From the very beginning we have been clear that residents should be at the heart of these plans. It is their knowledge and understanding of their community that we need if we’re going to deliver real improvements to Collyhurst.
“Collyhurst is already a great place to live and with the help of local residents these plans will make it even better. We want the people of Collyhurst to ask questions and help shape the vision for their area.
“I’d urge as many people as possible to go along to one of the events. But there are other ways of being part of the conversation, so please get in touch if you need more information.”
FEC is hosting a number of consultation events in the coming weeks to gather input on the plans.

Other members of the design team are Civic Engineers, Simon Fenton Partnership, Watt Energy and Consulting Engineers, Avison Young, Sandy Brown Associates, Hoare Lea and Exterior Architecture.
