Just one minute, Rob Maxwell

Meet Rob Maxwell, managing director of AZTEC, the fit-out and construction contractor based in Liverpool and Manchester

Your first job: Living by the coast (in Liverpool) during my childhood always made the Navy seem intriguing, so after leaving high school, I joined the Royal Navy as a mechanical engineer. I left after two years and one lap of the world later after experiencing various adventures. I realised that it just was not for me, although I still often think one more trip back to Rio would be worthwhile!

Current job: I was appointed managing director of AZTEC in early 2009, with a view to using my enthusiastic, dynamic approach to re-focus the business to become a more corporate, professional operation.

First contract: I secured various fit-out contracts during the earlier stages of my career from the easier 1,000 sq ft tenant CAT B works to the more complicated projects within one of many listed buildings in Liverpool and Manchester.

Last contract: The last contract our team secured was the full refurbishment of a dental surgery at Wirral PCT, further indication of our intent to diversify into other markets that AZTEC is not historically known in.

First car: I was lucky enough to get a Mini when I passed my test so I had some fun (and often uncomfortable) times driving to and from Portsmouth when I was in the Navy!

Current car: Mercedes E- class coupe.

Best decision: Departmentalising the entire company's structure to enable rapid, yet achievable growth on already solid foundations.

Worst decision: Not doing the above sooner.

Current projects: We are just coming to the end of a significant social housing contract where we have completely refurbished five sheltered accommodation facilities throughout Merseyside. We are also currently working on a 30,000 sq ft CAT A fit-out contract in Liverpool City Centre, as well as some smaller contracts around the UK.

Five-year plan: Global domination! We are all working hard to grow the established business and ensure that we are number one when it comes to refurbishment, fit-out and construction, whilst always keeping a keen eye on quality, programme and budget. Over the next five years, the plan is to continue to focus on expanding the business and establishing further regional offices throughout the UK. We have recently diversified into alternative markets such as social housing and 'raw' construction and will be looking at further opportunities within these sectors, whilst continuing our great work within the fit-out industry, which is what we originally built our reputation on.
