Expansion in offing for Wavertree student flats

Liverpool’s student housing provision was boosted again after the council’s planning committee voted unanimously to approve plans to expand a student accommodation block on Woodside Street.

Under the plans for Woodside Court, put forward by Alexander Property Group, which operates three student blocks in Liverpool, a pair of extensions will be added to bookend the existing block and incorporate an additional 16 rooms, adding 3,000 sq ft to the property.

The approval is the latest indication of Liverpool City Council’s desire to boost its student accommodation offering. Other recent consents it has granted include Legacie Development’s 280-bedroom scheme at Rose Place and developer Fusion Students’ 420 apartments on the site of the former Hondo Chinese supermarket.

Within the extensions at Woodside Court, 10 of the 16 rooms will be bedrooms and there will be six additional kitchens.

As a condition of the planning permission, Alexander Property will pay for the planting of trees in the immediate vicinity to account for the loss of trees brought about by the development.

The existing building is sub-divided internally into four blocks with two separate front entrances. It provides four flats on the ground floor, first and second floor with a further four in the converted loft space.

Geo-Neo UK Architectural, a Liverpool-based design studio, drew up plans for the project.

The council’s case officer for the scheme described the plans as “straightforward and non-contentious”.
