RIBA: Materials Conservation (Brick) – The use of lime mortars with traditional brickwork

Advanced bricklayer Terrence Lee will be speaking on the use of lime mortars with traditional brickwork. His training and lecturing is underpinned by his own practical work and his work with architects and other conservation professionals on traditional brick buildings.

The session will cover:

  • Traditional brickwork & conservation
  • Assessment of the brickwork – building in the wider context, identifying significance, types of brickwork & jointing, natures, condition, agenda of decay methods and construction, remediation
  • Sampling, selection of materials, gauging and mixing lime mortars for use with brick and masonry
  • Case studies in remediation and problems associated with working with contractors

Terrence is a City & Guilds Advanced Craft bricklayer working solely in the conservation/heritage sector, and specializing in the conservation of traditional brickwork.
