The new directive is looming large on the horizon; in seeking to achieve the prevention and remedying of environmental damage and reinforcing the ‘polluter pays’ principle what, in reality, are going to be the main implications of the new legislation? Warren Percival, principal environmental consultant, RSK Group, on Site Waste Management Plans. Do you understand the basic waste legislative framework in the UK, SWMP legislation and how this is likely to affect your organisation? Delegates will be walked through the process of creating a SWMP, the key steps to take, and what support is out there in the marketplace to assist you and your organisation. Are you aware of the risks of purchasing a brownfield site which was previously owned by a former nationalised body or defunct local authority? This short session will briefly take you through the legal framework governing the contaminated land regime. Peter Witherington, group deputy chairman, RSK Group, offers a practical perspective on dealing with land contamination. Even though in the UK we have been trying to establish a framework for dealing with contaminated land for the last 20 years, we still have numerous uncertainties and obstacles to negotiate during the redevelopment process. This session will look at the current regulatory framework, describe the risk-based approach and look at the pitfalls. There will be a chance for questions and answers and further networking before closing around 10:30am.
