Leading Success in Schools

For some time now, leaders and managers have looked to learn from sport. Just this summer, we saw athletes performing at their peak, achieving success at the highest level and being rewarded for years of hard work. Leaders in organisations face the dual challenges of both achieving high levels of performance and sustaining them. School leaders are tasked with achieving improved and sustainable outcomes and closing attainment gaps in a constantly changing policy landscape. The quality of school leadership is an area of ever-growing concern amongst policy makers, practitioners and parents.

Join us for this event with Dame Kathy August and former Olympian and European Judo Champion Rowena Birch who will explore the skill and mind sets required to excel in school leadership and pupils’ education.

Speakers: Dame Kathy August DBE and Olympian Rowena Birch Dame Kathy August, who was awarded the DBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List for services to education. In 2003, Kathy took on the major challenge of becoming the first Principal of the Manchester Academy in Moss Side, which was one of the first city academies in the UK and had previously been described as “one of the worst gang infested comprehensives in the country”. Just over five years later, the Academy was judged to be outstanding by Ofsted.

Rowena Birch was crowned the European Judo Champion in 1994 and took part in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA. Rowena will be using her experience gained from elite sports to inspire both pupils and colleagues and how to adopt such approaches in your own class and staff rooms. Amongst other themes we will explore decentralising power, improving focus, increasing trust, and building resilience.
