Fully Funded Workshop on Energy and Grid Connection Basics

If you are a consultant or contractor within or looking to supply into the renewable energy market, or interested in installing a small wind turbine, this workshop will provide you with the ESSENTIAL knowledge you'll need before considering the connection of your renewable energy project to the grid.

Who should attend?

Establishing electricity grid connections for any renewable energy installation can be easy or difficult. This workshop provides the knowledge to avoid mistakes, unforeseen costs and achieve successful outcomes and is suitable for installers, consultants, developers, designers, and anyone interested in grid connection projects up to 50 kW. The workshop is FREE to Small to Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) based in the Northwest. An eligible SME will have no more than 250 employees and a turnover under €50M.

Delivery and format

The workshop will be delivered by Geoff Owen, a grid connection engineer with over 30 years' experience of working in the grid connection industry, previously based with United Utilities, Scottish Power, Central Networks and Envirolink.

Morning session:

• Renewable Energy – Why you need to know about Grid Connection • Energy Basics – volts, amps and kilowatts, simple electrical terminology and calculations • Practical demonstrations – explaining power measurement • The difference of AC, single and 3 phase supply – why it matters • How you get your electricity, how you can sell it back and Feed-in-Tariffs

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, with an opportunity to network

Afternoon session:

• Picture tour guide helping you to understand different sizes of electrical supplies • Tips for carrying out site surveys • Simple explanation of generation connection requirements • Why we use an inverter or control panel to connect generation • Why generation connections need permission to connect
