Throughout 2022, fbe Greater Manchester is exploring innovative solutions to growing climate concerns.

July’s breakfast discussion, hosted by U+I at Mayfield, will explore the value and importance of green infrastructure within our towns and cities. Innovative green infrastructure can help alleviate environmental issues such as the urban heat sink and urban flooding, and can improve the health of citizens through attractive, engaging spaces that build a better relationship with the natural world.

Greening the City will shine a light on three innovative Manchester projects that embrace the value of green space at contrasting scales from a massive urban extension to an inner-city park and a linear thread weaving through the original modern city. Manchester has a wealth of massive industrial infrastructure, much of which has lain dormant for decades. This is such an exciting time for the city with several ambitious schemes coming forward that transform our industrial, functional spaces into something unique, green and inspiring.

Our guest chair for Greening the City is Paul Morris of Civic Engineers and the event will include three keynote presentations followed by a panel discussion with opportunities for audience Q&A.

Our first keynote speaker will be Mike Harrison of U+I, our host for Greening The City. Mike will take us through the journey of Mayfield Park, Manchester’s first ever city centre public park and the centrepiece of the wider Mayfield masterplan.

Hillary Brett-Parr of Far East Consortium (FEC) will show us FEC’s ambitious plans for North Victoria, a £4bn investment that will transform 390 acres of industrial hinterland. Green space is at the heart of the masterplan for Victoria North, creating a unique opportunity for a new urban green corridor connecting the city and the northern suburbs.

Matt Cartwright of Twelve Architecture will bring the plans for Castlefield Viaduct linear park to life. This collaboration between The National Trust and Manchester City Council will repurpose a long-dormant, iconic piece of Manchester’s industrial legacy.

Following our keynote presentations we will discuss a range of issues around green urban infrastructure with a panel of experts drawn from property, academic research and literature. The event will conclude with an opportunity for the audience to put their questions to our expert panel.
