Artificial intelligence (AI) is the topic of the moment, infiltrating everything from how we write content (this excerpt has been written with the assistance of ChatGPT) to major industries like medicine, law and media. In the domain of the built environment, AI is reshaping how we design, construct and manage buildings. While the uses of this new technology are in their infancy, AI has the potential to transform every stage of the building lifecycle.

Design

Integrating AI into design tools allows for precision and efficiency at the click of a button. Architects and engineers are harnessing these solutions to optimise energy usage, predict structural weaknesses and generate complex designs that adapt to their environments.

But how do we stave off over-reliance and how do we ensure it enhances human creativity rather than replaces it?

Project management

In construction, AI-powered robots, data analytics and automated systems are revolutionising project management and efficiency. The upshot is projects are safer, quicker and more cost-efficient.

But with automation comes concerns around job displacement and the shifting role of labour. Can AI-driven advancements be harnessed to benefit workers rather than replace them?

Building performance

Once buildings are in operation, AI is proving useful in optimising their performance in real time. Smart buildings that respond to the needs of their occupants, reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability are becoming the standard.

Speakers

The event will feature an interactive session with chair Sophie Hodges, followed by three keynote speakers each covering how AI is being integrated into their specialisms.

Keynote one – Jason Taylor, Senior Lecturer at MMU, AI Lead & DELTA Lead

Jason will take the stage to explore the profound impact AI is having on education and the future of architectural practice.

Keynote two – Nick Tyrer, Associate Architect at BDP and AI technical lead

Nick will show how AI is being actively used in real-world architectural practices today, offering a grounded look at its practical applications and the balance between creativity and automation.

Keynote three – Dan Coleby – Advania UK Ltd

Dan will present their cutting-edge AI work for a large rail contractor, their work in the development of software that automates RFP responses and explain the breadth of what is achievable with Microsoft AI technologies.

Tom Mossop Arup’s Data and AI lead and Pedro Rente Lourenco who is Laing O’Rourke’s Group Head of Data and Analytics will then join the keynote speakers for a panel discussion.
