Cumbria is at a pivotal moment in its history, as it navigates two new governing bodies. Our update will tackle what the creation of Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council means for the county and its £11bn GVA.
Also on the agenda: the tourism economy (the county boasts 45m annual visitors), industrial potential and growth opportunities. Don’t miss this chance to meet the area’s movers and shakers.

- ANGELA JONES, WESTMORLAND & FURNESS COUNCIL | The new unitary authority replaced three previous local authorities in the region as of April 2023. Projects in the area include the £17.5m overhaul of Barrow town centre.
- NICKY GORDON, GENESIS HOMES | The company completed on close to 170 homes during the latest financial year and is on track to achieve its ambitions of building 200 homes each year by 2026.
- JO LAPPIN, CUMBRIA LEP | As chief executive, Jo is responsible for Cumbria's economic and business growth. The LEP is overseeing the delivery of 17 local growth deal programmes.
- DAN VISSER, CUMBRIA TOURISM | Cumbria hosts around 47 million tourists annually which sustains approximately 26% of the county’s working population and over 20% of the economy.
- RICHARD PEACE, SPIRIT ENERGY | Operators of the Morecambe gas fields and Barrow terminal. Richard has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry in the UK.
- DIANNE RICHARDSON, BECBC | BECBC is a membership organisation for the clean energy and nuclear decommissioning supply chain.
- JANE MEEK, CUMBERLAND COUNCIL | The council has taken over the area previously covered by the Allerdale, Carlisle City, and Copeland authorities as of April 2023.
