Enabling works start for £36m Golborne station
The Greater Manchester train station is on track to open in spring 2028, with contractor J. Murphy and Sons having started ground investigation and surveys over the weekend.
When complete, the two-platform Golborne will provide hourly train services connecting the Wigan town to Manchester’s city centre via Manchester Victoria.
Transport for Greater Manchester is understood to be finalising the appointment of a main contractor for the construction of the station, with an eye towards start building the station this summer.
Golborne station will sit close to its predecessor, which closed in the 1960s. That means it will sit on the West Coast Main Line just off Railway Road. It will be five miles south of Wigan North Western station.
The new train station will have step-free access for its two platforms. The project for the station also includes improvements to the town centre car park on site.
The project is expected to cost £36m, up £4m from predictions made last year prior to a detailed design and full business case being finalised. The station is now due to open a year later than expected as well.
WSP is the main consultant for the TfGM scheme, with AECOM having assisted on a preliminary ecological appraisal.

One train an hour? I thought the whole point of Bee Network Rail was to have turn up and go frequency trains at all stations. One train per hour doesn’t seem very frequent for an urban rail station.
