Elliot Group’s Falkner Street flats approved
Elliot Group has secured planning approval for a £15m residential-led development on a derelict plot on the corner of Falkner Street and Bedford Street in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter.
The scheme on the site of the former Toxteth Community College has been designed by Falconer Chester Hall, and will provide 109 flats over four floors.
Women’s training organization and social enterprise Blackburne House is to take 8,000 sq ft on the ground floor.
Blackburne House currently occupies the former Liverpool Institute High School for Girls further along Falkner Street and has been looking for space to expand its range of training programs and social enterprise initiatives.
The homes are largely one- and two-bedroom units for rent to professional couples and young families. Students are not being targeted as tenants and the project will include a residents’ gym.
Work is due to start on site in the spring.
Elliot Lawless, co-founder of Elliot Group, said: “This will bring a derelict and overgrown site back in to productive use and it’s to the council’s credit that they wanted to encourage modern architecture that was respectful to its Georgian setting, rather than just pastiche.
“The big ticket regeneration projects like the ACC and Liverpool ONE took out many of the major sites in Liverpool and the city’s on-going regeneration is now largely focused on transforming gap sites like this. Someone once described Liverpool as a gap-toothed beauty and developments such as this are fixing the city’s smile.”
