Duggan Morris wins Mersey Observatory competition

Duggan Morris Architects' 50-metre illuminated tower has won an international competition for the Mersey Observatory at Crosby beach near Liverpool.

The design will offer visitors 360 degree views across Liverpool, Wirral and North Wales, as well as providing a vantage viewing point for Antony Gormley's Other Place iron men installation.

Replacing a disused radar tower, the observatory will be illuminated from the inside and will feature two viewing platforms, a café and an exhibition centre.

The project is led by the Mersey Basin Campaign, and is backed by a consortium of Peel Holdings, regeneration body Mersey Waterfront and the North West Development Agency.

The Mersey Basin Campaign will now approach organisations to secure funding for the scheme.
