DeSimone appoints director to aid Northern expansion

Mark Moppett has joined the engineering consultancy as integrated engineering, safety, and technical expertise director.

Appointed by DeSimone in September, he will work with its Manchester-based team.

His appointment indicates the firm’s desire to strengthen its engineering, forensics, and expert witness capabilities.

Moppett will contribute to the company’s deeper understanding of and the ability to comply with building safety standards, to resolve complex structural design issues, and provide expert testimony in legal disputes.

Moppett has been appointed in a new role – he will become part of the 30+ DeSimone employees who are currently based across Manchester and Hebden Bridge.

With more than 40 years of practice as a chartered structural engineer, Moppett has a history of working on projects such as the Hong Kong Stadium, and more locally, the City of Manchester Stadium and Manchester Art Gallery.

Moppett has worked for the Booth King Partnership since 2004, he became managing director there in 2006, holding that position until 2021.

Of his appointment, Moppett said: “DeSimone’s reputation in the built environment as a responsive, trusted, and highly skilled partner – built over 55 years – assures me that this move offers me the opportunity to contribute my diverse expertise at the highest level of service.”

“I’m excited to help the architects, developers, owners, and others that DeSimone serves, to create and reimagine exceptional buildings built with structural integrity and outstanding safety compliance, as well as guided by peerless legal counsel.”

Stephen DeSimone, chief executive and chairman of DeSimone, said: “As we expand our services to clients worldwide, Mark’s expertise in structural engineering, compliance, and legal areas will be invaluable.

“We welcome him to our Manchester office and anticipate that he will be instrumental in helping our clients deliver innovative projects across industries.”

DeSimone, a New York-based firm, is increasing its presence in the UK and expanding into the North of England, having recently acquired the Yorkshire-based structural engineering firm DP Squared in August 2023, and construction experts Decipher around the same time.

DP Squared, now a DeSimone company, has contributed expertise to projects such as Renaker’s £1bn skyscraper cluster and the refurbishment of Central Hall Manchester.
