Designers urged to create spaces that inspire

Regeneration agency Renew North West and the North West Development Agency have launched a public realm design guide to help architects and designers create "places that people will love and go back to".

The guide, called Creating Inspirational Spaces, was written by design practice Gillespies as part of Renew's Places Matter programme. It outlines a framework of qualities and principles to consider when developing public realm projects. The framework is designed to apply to projects of all sizes, in varying locations.

Keswick Market Place in Cumbria is held up by Renew as a prime example of the qualities it is trying to promote.

Annie Atkins, programme manager, Places Matter, said: "Keswick Market Place is a thoughtful, well-executed scheme that reflects the character of the area. Benefits gained by the scheme such as the one in Keswick include increased access, a flexible space, improved health and well-being and growth in the visitor economy."

The new handbook is the sister publication of the earlier Renew report The Economic Value of Urban Design, which underlines the financial benefits of building high-quality design into schemes.

Renew is currently distributing the public realm guide to built environment professionals in the region. To download a copy click here.
