Design team sought for £12.85m Venue Cymru overhaul

Conwy Council has launched procurement as it seeks an architect-led team for refurbishment and expansion of the existing foyer at the Llandudno destination.

Government funding of £10m, promised through the Conservatives’ Levelling Up Fund, was reaffirmed by the Labour administration in February last year for Venue Cymru, the largest arts venue in Wales outside of Cardiff.

As set out in the brief, the team will include architect, services engineer, structural engineer, theatre consultant, access consultant, acoustic consultant and principal designer roles for CDM and building regulations.

Design work is programmed to commence in March 2026. According to the brief, the design team contract value is £2.4m. The tender is open until 28 January.

The brief said that the primary scope elements for the design team will be a new Culture Hub as an extension to the existing foyer, various refurbishment works in and around existing foyers, and refurbishment of the existing auditorium including replacement of seating and ventilation improvements.

The Office for Wales said last year that the £10m for Venue Cymru will “deliver a step-change in the use of the building, including the relocation of the existing library and Tourist Information Centre to create a modern and innovative cultural hub”.

A separate tender went out in November covering stage lighting and management and AV systems.
