Design competition for Sefton coastal observatory
RIBA has launched an international competition to design an observatory at the mouth of the River Mersey in Sefton.
The brief is for an "exciting new landmark structure and visitor facility" for a site which now houses the defunct Crosby Radar Tower.
The designs will benefit from views of the river, the Irish Sea, Wirral peninsula and North Wales beyond, as well as the nearby Crosby windfarm and Antony Gormley's 'Another Place' statues on the beach.
The Observatory project is being led by the Mersey Basin Campaign and backed by the North West Development Agency, Mersey Waterfront, and Peel Holdings, owner of Liverpool docks.
Walter Menzies, chairman of the Mersey Basin Campaign, said: "The River Mersey changed the world. There is no finer location on the waterfront from which to explore its past, present and future."
