Demolition starts at Seel Street
Mees Demolition Group has started work on demolition at the PSS site on Seel Street in Liverpool city centre, which will make way for an extension to Elliot Group’s £36m Wolstenholme Square project.
The new building at the site is set to include 205 apartments, including 69 two-bed homes, as well as a pool and a spa. There will also be commercial units on the ground floor. Newry Construction is for the main contractor for what is effectively a bolt-on to the main Wolstenholme Square project, which comprises 447 apartments.
PSS, or Person Shaped Support, is a social enterprise that provies support for people throughout society. Liverpool is the head office, with support locations in Yorkshire, the Midlands and Wales.
Thomas Mee of Mees Demolition Group said “We are witnessing a lot of positive changes to the Seel Street and Wolstenhome Square areas of the city centre.
“The modern style warehouse that has housed PSS for over 20 years was not fit for purpose any longer, so we will be completely clearing the site to make way for a new 11-storey development.”
He added: “We are witnessing a real resurgence in city centre developments for both residential and commercial use, with a lot of ‘grot spots’ being removed. Mees Demolition Group are currently involved in several sites that will change the face of Liverpool.”
A PSS spokesman said ahead of its move earlier this year: “It’s an exciting time for us at PSS. We’ve been working at our Seel Street office for over 20 years now, and although it’s served us well during that time, the building is getting pretty old and tired, and is costing us a lot of money to repair and maintain.”
The last link between Ropewalks and Liverpool One! Good to see. We should see a seamless flow of people from one to the other when this is all finished. This will have a much bigger impact than all the individual projects separately. We could do with some trees the Hanover Street end of Seel Street – ‘Mr. Seel’s Garden’ – one for Grosvenor?!
