Cumbria property developers win second award

Applethwaite has won 'Best New Development in a Conservation Area' with its mixed use development scheme, The Royal, in Windermere, Cumbria.

The developer, part of the Preston-based Eric Wright Group, gained the award from The Royal Town Planning Institute North West Regional Awards.

The Royal comprises seven shops and 16 apartments and is the result of the three-year joint venture between Maple Grove Developments – part of the Eric Wright Group – and Lake District developer Robert Hughes, which form Applethwaite.

Applethwaite also collected a 'Best Regeneration Project' award for the scheme at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North West of England Awards, earlier this year.

Robert Hughes, director of Applethwaite, said: "Our double award win is indicative of the high quality results achieved through close collaborative working with the Lake District National Park planning authority.

"The scheme allowed us to take a redundant building in a conservation area, replicate the finer features and combine them with modern architecture to bring a striking new addition to the streetscape of an attractive Lakeland town."

The annual RTPI regional planning awards recognise the diversity of planning achievements, from large-scale spatial planning to small-scale environmental enhancements.

Applethwaite's latest award will be officially presented at the RTPI North West Annual General Meeting on Friday 5 December 2008.
