Cullen steps up to take Stockport CEO role

Having been deputy chief executive to the GMCA-bound Caroline Simpson, Michael Cullen has won the race for the council’s top job.

Cullen has today been selected as the preferred candidate to replace Simpson as Stockport Council’s next chief executive.

It was announced in March that Simpson had been selected  to replace Eamonn Boylan at the GMCA, sparking a recruitment drive for her replacement.

Three months on, the authority has opted to hire someone who already has 18 years under his belt at the organisation, the last four at deputy CEO.

Cullen, who joined Stockport from Knowsley Council, said it was an “honour and a privilege” to be offered the job.

“To succeed Caroline Simpson, a dear friend and colleague, means we can continue to build on the legacy she leaves and work even closer with the GMCA in the future,” he said.

Cullen is keen to build on the feel-good vibe that has characterised Stockport in recent years.

“There’s a buzz in the air, and I am excited to take this pivotal role for the council, working with councillors, partners, businesses, communities, and colleagues to deliver for our residents.”

“I want to build on our recent accolades, such as being the Sunday Times Best Place to live in the North West, by continuing with our ambitious plans for the future, building on the fantastic work that has already been delivered and going one step further to make Stockport not just the best place to live in the North West, but the best place to live in the country.”

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “Michael has extensive experience at a senior level and established themselves as the outstanding and credible candidate in an incredibly strong field of applicants. Michael showed huge passion for the people of Stockport and the future of our borough.

“I am looking forward to working with Michael on our ambitious plans we have for the borough in what has already been a great year for Stockport.”

“going one step further to make Stockport not just the best place to live in the North West, but the best place to live in the country.” – I was going to ask if he has ever been there, but clearly he has!

Where is the “feel good vibe” they talk of. Having lived in Stockport for over 30 years I must have missed something. It is very dreary going into the shop-less centre. All my mates and friends are in or around the town, where is this feel-good factor, its a dump and has been for many years now, unfortunately.

Congrats! Now resolve the multi-decade embarrassment of Woodbank Hall – seek out development partners, raise grants, and get the Grade II* listed building restored to a new and sustainable new use, please.

I wish him well, he will need good fortune to negotiate the toxic political environment at Stockport MBC.
