Crewe car park wins through, Aldi refused

Cheshire East Council’s strategic planning board has granted planning permission for a six-storey car park behind the Royal Hotel, close to Crewe station, while the supermarket’s plans at University Way have been rejected.

The 243-space car park has been designed by Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher. GVA How Planning advised developer Property Capital, which also has plans to develop the listed Royal.

CJCT’s car park project will require the demolition of outbuildings on the site and has been brought forward in anticipation of increased parking demand around Crewe’s HS2 station.

The project, which is two storeys and 142 spaces lighter than the original proposal, had been deferred at October’s meeting, since when more information has been provided on traffic impact and plans tweaked at the car park’s top level.

Mark Murphy of GVA HOW Planning said: “This project successfully demonstrates how private and public bodies can work in a collaborative manner to achieve a visually stunning, yet functional piece of infrastructure. It is hoped that this development will be the first in a series of major investments in the Crewe Hub area.”

The professional team also includes SCP Transport as highways consultant, architectural visualisation specialist Virtual Planit, and Miller Goodall as air quality consultant.

Also in Crewe, Cheshire East’s southern planning committee has this week refused an application for an Aldi store at University Way, in line with officer recommendation. The site was intended to replace Aldi’s existing offer at Grand Junction Retail Park.
