Council outlines Anfield high street proposals
Liverpool City Council has announced plans to incorporate a redeveloped Walton Breck Road into the £290m regeneration plan being delivered at Anfield, home to Liverpool FC.
While details are due to be defined after a consultation and feasibility process, the new high street is set to include a mix of retail units, commercial space, houses and apartments.
According to the council, the creation of the street would see several derelict buildings demolished or rebuilt. The road could be narrowed to create wider pavements and make it more pedestrian-friendly, with the creation of outdoor spaces and landscaping.
The work would be carried out in phases over the next three to four years, as the latest stage the £260m regeneration plan announced in 2013, which is being delivered by a partnership between Liverpool City Council, Your Housing Group and Liverpool FC. The rejuvenation of the high street was identified at that time as a key project.
The local community will now be consulted on the new Walton Breck Road proposals.
Masterplanner Planit-IE has produced a series of artist’s impressions which show how the new street and public realm would integrate the different parts of the Anfield redevelopment.
The proposals would affect an area from Walton Breck Road’s junction with Robson Street to the junction of Oakfield Road and Houlding Street.
There could also be a new tree-lined avenue, with landscaped gardens, stretching up what is now Vienna Street and Venice Street from the high street to Robson Street.
The council is seeking residents’ views on the scheme. A public exhibition will be held at the Isla Gladstone, Stanley Park, on Monday 5 September and Tuesday 6 September to show the plans in detail. The exhibition is open from 11am to 4pm on Monday and 4pm to 8pm on Tuesday.
In the last three years, 398 new homes in the area have been built, 300 homes refurbished and 238 substandard and derelict properties demolished.
Anfield Sports & Community Centre has been refurbished and a new health centre and school have been built and opened. Stanley Park has also undergone a programme of improvements.
In the next two years there are plans to build a new hotel adjacent to the high street as well as further housing renovation and building.
