Costain wins £110m Preston road contract

The engineering company has been appointed to deliver four miles of road linking Preston and Southern Fylde to the M55, as well as connecting new and existing housing areas in North West Preston.

The distributor road is a key element of plans to support new development and economic growth outlined in Lancashire County Council’s highways and transport masterplan for the area, and one of four major highway schemes to receive funding under the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire city deal.

The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership has released a CGI video showing the route of the distributor and connecting roads.

The scheme, awarded via the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal, will link the A583/A584 to a new junction on the M55 via a 4km dual carriageway, with link roads to new housing areas at Cottam and North West Preston.

The distributor will support planned housing in North West Preston, improve access to the new Enterprise Zone in Warton, alongside a new east-west link road will connect through traffic to the dual carriageway to avoid congested routes.

Costain’s contract includes supporting the council in delivering the scheme through the statutory process, including planning and design development prior to project delivery.

Planners are due to produce a planning application for the routes by the end of 2015, with work scheduled to start on the east-west link in 2016 and on the Preston Western Distributor and Cottam Link Road in 2018.

Preparatory works will start shortly, with main project delivery taking place from 2017 to 2019.
