Costain lands three-year deal with Urenco
The contractor has been chosen as programme delivery partner for new and upgraded infrastructure at nuclear fuel group Urenco’s site in Capenhurst, Cheshire.
The value of the contract is undisclosed, but the framework is expected to see contracts awarded to Costain over a minimum of three years.
Costain will lead and deliver an integrated programme of infrastructure investment, including developing design, procurement, construction and commissioning of works and upgrades at Capenhurst.
Urenco’s Capenhurst site, which has been in operation since 1973, provides uranium enrichment services to produce fuel for civil nuclear power stations in the UK and beyond, as the drive to generate low-carbon electricity continues.

The site lies within Cheshire West & Chester’s boundaries, between Connah’s Quay and Ellesmere Port. It is undergoing a series of work programmes to support its long-term resilience, including establishing Europe’s first High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) advanced fuels facility.
Costain will work closely with local supply chain partners and provide strategic direction, integration, assurance and governance of the works.
Sam White, managing director, natural resources at Costain, said: “Ensuring the supply of safe, low-carbon electricity is critical for creating a sustainable future. We’re bringing decades of experience in predictable, best-in-class delivery to help safeguard the UK’s energy security and support the transition to more sustainable energy generation.
“Costain has a strong presence in the North West and this award reinforces our commitment to improving the lives of local communities through the provision of new jobs, developing skills and driving prosperity.”
Costain has built up a track record in critical nuclear projects, and also remains busy in other areas. The firm recently completed an upgrade on 10 miles of the M6 between Warrington and Wigan, and is amid a programme for United Utilities.
Urenco is a British-German-Dutch consortium, operating uranium enrichment plants across those countries and the US.
