Cost of Maghull motorway improvements increases by £1m

The cost of works at Junction 1 of the M58 near Maghull has increased by £1m, after the project “experienced significant delays following prolonged land assembly issues”.

John Sisk & Son, on behalf of Sefton Council, has been on site since May, delivering work which includes stopping up the nearby Giddygate Lane, parallel to the motorway, and the construction of a northbound off-slip road and a southbound on-slip road.

The scheme is aimed at reducing traffic on the A59 and residential roads around Maghull, as well as unlocking land for future development.

A £5.5m package from the Liverpool City Region Local Growth Fund was agreed in 2017. However, according to a report to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, a further £500,000 is being allocated, to assist in the increase in construction costs, which total £943,000 due to the delay.

The total funding provided by the Combined Authority is now £6m.

Practical completion is due to take place by June 2020, whereas previously the slip roads were set to be operational by spring.

Sisk has been attached to the scheme since 2017 and is working with Atkins as design partner.
