Contractor sought for Stockport BHS revamp
Stockport Council’s cabinet has approved the refurbishment of the town’s former BHS store, due to contain JD Sports and Poundland, as part of ongoing work to reposition Merseyway shopping centre.
Cllr David Meller, cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “The proposed redevelopment of the former BHS unit is an important strategic project both for the redevelopment of a key property in Merseyway to create modern retail space for identified tenants, and as the investment would support the wider Merseyway and town centre as a whole.”
The proposal to reconfigure the store, owned by the council since July 2019, into three separate retail units went before the economy and regeneration scrutiny committee earlier this month.
Authority has now been delegated to the deputy chief executive for place and the deputy chief executive for corporate support and services to appoint a contractor.
Stockport’s intention is to appoint a design team and contractor through two local frameworks – the Property Alliance Framework and Procure North West – with work targeted to start in early 2021, handing over towards the end of the year.
Poundland has occupied the former BHS since 2019 and JD Sports is due to relocate from an existing unit in Merseyway.
Merseyway needs radical change not the refurbishment of a tired old shop unit. Whole scale demolition, residential development, opening up of the river and the provision of more green space is needed not another shop unit which is doomed to fail.
