Contractor needed for Rochdale school

Rochdale Council is seeking a contractor to help build a new school on an empty brownfield site in the borough.

The 15-month contract will start on 1 November and will involve the construction of a new building to house Heybrook Primary School and South Street Nursery School.

Both schools will relocate to a new site at the south of Dean Street and Halifax Road, which is bordered by Belfield Road and Hamer Lane.

Some industrial units and houses have been demolished on the new site and remediation work may be required under the contract. The proposed school section of the site is adjacent to the new healthcare centre and a new fire station is planned to the north of the site. Heybrook Primary School is currently located in Park Road.

The new school and nursery building is being funded through the Government's primary capital programme initiative.

The council said the new facility will comprise a primary school for 630 children and nursery for 78 places, as well a new home for the Heybrook Sure Start Children's Centre, which is based at the primary school in Park Road at present.

The council estimates that the total value of the contract is in the region of approximately £6m.

Deadline for submitting tenders is 12pm on Friday 23 April.
