Consultation opens on Hindley masterplan
Public consultation events are due to take place this month to gather views on a major mixed-use development being planned by Wigan Council and Peel Land & Property on a 275-acre site in Hindley.
An outline planning application is being prepared for the project, which will see the delivery of up to 2,000 family homes, 35 acres of employment land and a new east-west link road.
The masterplan also includes 100 acres of open area made up of natural spaces, play areas and sports pitches.
The land was identified as a broad location for development within the adopted Wigan core strategy. The South of Hindley project forms part of Peel’s Ocean Gateway strategic corridor spanning across Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and Warrington.
The proposed new road through the site will connect the A58 Liverpool Road and the A578 Leigh Road at its junction with the North Leigh development site.
Walking, cycling and sustainable transport also form part of the plan with improvements to footpaths, cycle tracks and public transport.
The consultation events are due to take place on:
- Wednesday 19 October, 1pm to 7pm, at AFC Hindley Juniors, 151 Park Road, Hindley
- Tuesday 25 October, 1pm to 7pm, Hindley Community Association, Tudor House, 8 Liverpool Road, Hindley
- Wednesday 26 October, 1pm to 7pm, Hindley Green Family Church at Bethel, Atherton Road, Hindley Green
Hyder Consulting and Bilfinger GVA are advising on the planning application.
This area is not only currently home to over 200 horses (on average ridden by two riders, thats now 400 people out of a hobbit) but the site is also used by 1000s of local horse riders. I do hope they have a bridleway plan, us riders want to exercise ourselves as well as our horses not just in a small circle but connecting with all the other wonderful bridleways Wigan has to offer. I do hope these horse riders are taken into account!!!

All look very good on paper but the reality is totally different, The local infrastructure round Hindley is unable to take the development just to place on a map a series of proposed facilities isn’t good enough they have to be confirmed to ensure they are provided. If we wish to improve through traffic in Hindley how will this happen when the problem points the bird and the Bethel are left untouched and the idea of Park Road being a help is laughable. 2200 homes equals 6,000 vehicles possibly 6000 people on the roads originally built for horse and carts – the council has to be joking!
