Consultation launches for £3m Birkenhead high street upgrade

Wirral Council is seeking feedback on how to improve Grange Road, Charing Cross junction, and Grange Road West.

The council is hoping to make the Birkenhead town centre roads more pedestrian-friendly and visually pleasing.

The proposals include trialling a low-traffic neighbourhood scheme on part of Grange Road West. This would see the addition of coloured surfacing and planters to show the boundary between the pedestrian area and traffic. Vehicular traffic would only be permitted in the westbound direction.

Other ideas include replacing paving materials on Grange Road, upgrading street furniture, and planting new trees.

The Charing Cross junction would see its pedestrian crossings replaced with wide and straight versions.

Cllr Tony Jones, chair of the council’s economy, regeneration, and housing committee said: “The Grange Road and Charing Cross area is a particularly busy part of Birkenhead town centre and these improvements aim to provide a more attractive place for people to shop, live, visit or work and will support the regeneration of Birkenhead town centre.”

Jones added: “Birkenhead town centre is at the heart of our regeneration plans and it is vital that people are able to tell us their views on these proposals and help us deliver for the residents, businesses and visitors.”

Money for the £3m project comes from Wirral’s successful bid to the Future High Streets Fund. Planit-IE and Mott Macdonald are assisting the council on the project.

The consultation concludes at 5pm on 22 January. You can access the consultation website at haveyoursay.wirral.gov.uk/charing-cross-and-grange-road-active-travel-scheme.

Not another consultation, hang on a minute these are professionals at the council planning team and they are asking the public how to design a shopping high street.
Surely the council planners know what to do, but if not go on a field trip to Germany or Spain and look at their methods, as whenever I go to these places I am envious of the quality of landscaping and materials they use , which surely would not be too costly over here .
