Construction starts on Trafford’s 147-home Bold Street

Intending to hand over the last property in September 2028, partners L&Q, Lovell, and Trafford Council have banded together to build a mix of affordable and market residences on the former Tamworth Estate.

Work has started on the neighbourhood of one-bed flats and two-to-four-bed terraced houses, which is being built on seven acres off Bold Street. The site formerly held three residential tower blocks and the Seahawk Pub, all of which were demolished by 2015.

Main contractor Lovell is targeting September this year as its deadline for the first homes to be handed over.

The residences themselves will comprise 16 social rent properties and 57 for shared ownership. The remainder will be sold at market prices.

Future residents will be able to enjoy a new park on the site – Church View Gardens.

“A safe, decent and affordable home is the foundation for a better life,” said Ben Townsend, new business director at L&Q.

He added later: “Through our partnership with Lovell and Trafford Council, this project will create a vibrant new neighbourhood, with green spaces, play areas and strong connections to the wider city.”

Lovell development director Martyn Hopkins chimed in: “Having worked across this region and within Manchester for decades, Lovell has a deep understanding of the community needs as well as the challenges that come with complex regeneration sites and we look forward to delivering this project alongside L&Q and providing real lasting benefits to new and existing residents.”

Levitt Bernstein designed the proposals for L&Q and Trafford, with support from Civic, Lucion, Wilkinson Cowan Partnership, and planner Euan Kellie Property Solutions.

Funding for the project comes in part from Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which awarded the project £2.9m from its brownfield programme in 2024.
