Construction starts on Stockport Community Fire Station

Due to open in autumn 2026, the fire station off King Street West is part of Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s £51m fire and rescue services estate refresh.

Seddon is the main contractor for the new Stockport Community Fire Station, which is to be renamed Stockport Central Community Fire Station. Demolition of the old station took place over the summer, allowing for a celebratory work starts ceremony to take place yesterday.

When complete, the station will be well-placed to service the town’s growing population – with plans in place for up to 1,328 homes nearby as part of the Stockport 8 development.

The new station has been in the pipeline for a while, having first been announced in 2021 alongside proposed replacement stations at Blackley and Whitefield, with new stations at Heywood, and Whitehill to follow after.

ISG had secured the contract for the three initial stations in 2023, but it went bust last year. Robertson took over the Blackley and Whitefield projects, with Seddon charged with the Stockport Community one. Blackley station will be operational late next month, while Whitefield is due to open next autumn.

The Stockport Community Fire Station was subject to a consultation in 2023 and received planning permission last year. The two storey, 9,700 sq ft facility will be 3,500 sq ft larger than its predecessor. Designs by Bradshaw Gass & Hope also include a training tower on the site.

Throughout the construction period, firefighters will be operating out of the nearby Whitehill station, according to the GMCA.

Kate Green, GMCA’s deputy mayor for safer and stronger communities, said: “This investment in our estate is creating new facilities that the community can benefit from and be proud of.”

She added later: “Modernising our estate is a key part of our Fire Plan, ensuring it is fit for purpose and meets the needs of our workforce and the public.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service assistant chief fire officer Sarah Nattrass stated: “It’s great to see construction on our third new-build community fire station getting underway. These new fire stations will provide a positive and engaging presence in their local communities while giving our staff the modern facilities they deserve.

“I am proud of all the work that has gone into our estates programme, building an estate that is fit for a modern Greater Manchester.”

Seddon donated £5,000 to the Fire Fighters Charity as part of its social value programme.

In addition to Seddon and Bradshaw Gass & Hope, the project team for the fire station includes Harley Haddow, Curtins, IGE Consulting, Jameson Acoustics, and Pennine Ecological. To learn more about the project, search reference DC/091287 on Stockport Council’s planning portal.
