Conlon wins college contract

Sefton Council has appointed Conlon Construction to build a £2m learning centre for young adults with special educational needs.

Thornton College, on the site of the former Thornton Primary School which closed in 2010, will use the existing administration offices, extended with two storeys to the north-east and a single-storey extension plus canopy to the south-west. The total building will be 13,500 sq ft.

The college is a partnership between Sefton Council, existing special schools and Hugh Baird College. Young adults with significant learning difficulties or disabilities will be supported through vocational studies and other learning, aimed at helping students progress into employment or further education.

Completion is scheduled for September 2011.
