Conlon delivers on £7.3m school extension

Preston-based Conlon Construction has completed an 18-month extension and renovation project at North Cestrian School in Altrincham.

Work on the school was completed over 18 months and involved the building and renovation of more than 193,680 sq ft across the site, which remained operational throughout.

North Cestrian was founded as a grammar school in 1951 with just 26 pupils, is expected to have a student population of 750 by 2022 and was granted free school status by the Department for Education in 2016

Designs for the project were provided by architect Cassidy + Ashton. The project has included a new main entrance and reception area, a new-build three-storey science, resistant materials and food technology extension, and a new dining hall and kitchen, increasing capacity from 40 to 120. The former dinging hall has been converted to music and performance rooms.

Other elements of the scheme included the relocation of the art department, new toilets, refurbishment of existing corridors and classrooms, and new staff facilities, including new lifts and new staff accommodation. Externally, works included resurfacing the entire playground and staff car park, as well as updating sports pitches.

Shaun Smith, project manager at Conlon Construction, said: “We have been very pleased to work with North Cestrian School to help them meet their growing demand, and will continue to work with local schools and organisations as part of the commitments we have made to taking on projects, which create real value for local communities and make a lasting difference.”
