Co-op puts Angel Square landscaping out to tender

The Co-operative Group is inviting bids from contractors to create a new public space in NOMA, it's 20-acre development in Manchester anchored by the new 325,000 sq ft Co-op headquarters.

The contract, valued at between £3m and £3.5m, is to deliver a 'high quality and vibrant' 43,000 sq ft square in front of the new HQ.

Ruairidh Jackson, strategy and development director for NOMA, said: "NOMA is a dynamic, modern development, and to this end we are always looking for expert teams to bring forward fresh, new ideas.

"The build of the public realm – phase three of NOMA – is no different, and the tender process to construct this phase is designed to be transparent and open to all. Whilst we are very happy with the work of [main contractor] BAM and all of the NOMA team, we are keen to welcome genuine bids for this build from any contractor who shares our vision and wants to work with us to help create this new part of the city centre. This new public space will open up the area in front of the Co-operative Group's new head office in to a square unlike any other in central Manchester, a welcoming, safe place for everyone to enjoy.

"In addition, we expect work to commence soon on the improvements to the local road network and the enhancement of power and other utilities supplies across the site, as the project continues to build momentum."

The timetable for the public realm work, designed by architects Mecanoo, is to appoint a contractor by the end of March, start on site in April and complete by 17 September.

The Co-op's new HQ, One Angel Square, is due for completion in the autumn.
