Care UK eyes consent for Wilmslow facility

The care home provider plans to deliver a 60-bedroom scheme on Manchester Road, but could struggle to win over councillors who twice refused a similar scheme Wilmslow proposed by a different developer.

Care UK’s proposed development would require the demolition of two properties and the creation of a two-storey care home for elderly residents on the 1.2-acre site north of Wilmslow town centre.

Earlier this year, New Care, a subsidiary of developer McGoff Group, urged Cheshire East Council to reverse its decision to block plans for a similar size care home off Handforth Road.

New Care’s plans were first refused in 2019 despite being recommended for approval by the council’s planning officers.

After the proposals were knocked back again in January, New Care’s chief executive Chris McGoff slammed the decision, describing it as “one of the most bizarre I have ever seen in my 25-year career’’.

Care UK’s development would be located a mile from where New Care planned to build its facility.

The project team for this scheme includes consultancy Dominic Lawson Bespoke Planning and KWL Architects.

The development “would make a valuable contribution towards housing for elderly people within the borough”, a council report said.

However, Wilmslow Town Council has objected to the plans on the grounds of overdevelopment in the local area, while concerns put forward by residents include the potential for local doctor’s surgeries to become overwhelmed and a lack of public transport in the area.

Cheshire East Council is to decide on the proposals on 4 November.
