Capita Symonds wins Coronation Street contract

Structural engineers Capita Symonds has been appointed to provide multidisciplinary services on the relocation of ITV's Coronation Street production facility to Peel's Media City in Salford Quays.

The company will be providing civil and structural engineering and geo-environmental services on the scheme on behalf of project managers Mace.

ITV will be building a production and studio centre for the soap opera.

Designed by Jenkins Design, the facility will be built by ITV on a 7.7 acre site at Trafford Wharf, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum North and accessed by a new bridge across the waterway to the main Media City UK complex.

Office space is also been earmarked for several floors at the Orange Building within Media City for ITV regional news, and support staff from across the business.

Capita Symonds said plans for the site alongside the Manchester Ship Canal include a new external film set two sound stage buildings, specialist production facilities and offices, dressing rooms and meeting space for production staff and cast.

ITV is relocating from its Quay Street home in central Manchester to Media City UK.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.
