Bury progresses overhaul of historic market

The council will spend £20m of Levelling Up Fund cash upgrading the popular town centre venue and creating a flexi-hall for events.

A public consultation on the proposed redevelopment of Bury Market is now open and will run until 29 January.

The plans for Bury Market, designed by Just H Architects, include:

  • A new oversailing canopy to cover and future-proof the existing outdoor market and make it more attractive and visible
  • A new flexi-hall that can be used for events and to support wellbeing, enterprise, education and cultural activities
  • Enhanced public spaces around the market such as more seating areas, greenery and better signage.

Vinci Construction has been appointed to build the flexi-hall and Gillespies is advising the council on its landscape proposals.

Leader of Bury Council Eamonn O’Brien, said: “The plans for Bury Market are a key part of our unprecedented investment into transforming the town centre.

“Using council money, plus £20m we won from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, we aim to secure a thriving future for our much-loved market.”

A planning application for the scheme is expected later this year.

The redevelopment of the markets forms part of Bury Council’s wider town centre regeneration plans, which feature the redevelopment of Mill Gate Shopping Centre in partnership with Bruntwood.

Other schemes in the council’s pipeline include extensive brownfield development across Radcliffe and Bury, as well as a new transport interchange.

what a ridculous waste of money, Bury Market could have been made so much more special and given a much stronger profile, ..events…since when did Bury have events for its own working and elderly folk,…well yes..never. Wste of Money as usual

I hope this works out well and that they truly listen to the market traders because many have failed in the past. Even with good intentions, it’s paramount that the traders are not priced out.

That first building looks like a crematorium.

How about spending some money on the huge amount of potholes particularly on Prestwich side roads. Park View Road is used as a rat run and is also the site of a busy school and is a danger and a blot on the area.

They need to use some of that money to bolster and support Bury Art Gallery, they already have an amazing space for events, wellbeing and cultural activities yet are threatening to cut funding for what is a vital space for the community… beggars belief they then launch this?!

Pleased to see Bury Market is getting some much needed investment that will ensure it’ll keep thriving for years to come!

This is fabulous. Bury market is key to the town center and warrants investment to improve appearance and attract more customers which will benefit the town in general.

So much as already been spent in Bury with the Rock development, throwing more money wont revive Bury. There needs to be high paying jobs created to support the retail.
