Bury approves Mountheath housing

Bury Council has approved plans for housing and commercial space on a 12-acre brownfield site in Prestwich.

Acting on behalf of AM Ventures 1, Manchester-based HOW Planning submitted an outline planning application for the new scheme earlier this year and the approval paves the way to develop detailed design proposals for the Mountheath site.

The approval establishes the principle of a mixed-use development at the site comprising up to 160 dwellings and approximately 32,000 sq ft of employment development. In addition, the scheme will facilitate off-site highways upgrades to improve the junction of Bury New Road and George Street. A layout for a traffic signal controlled junction has been developed in conjunction with Bury Council and TfGM to improve this junction.

Emma Williams, planner at HOW Planning, said: “This is an exciting scheme which will transform what is currently an unsuitable and unusable site into an attractive new development. Our client is dedicated to ensuring the delivery of high quality employment land, and a mix of housing types and tenures to widen the choice of high-quality homes in this highly accessible sustainable location. The redevelopment of the Mountheath site will jointly deliver a series of social, economic and environmental benefits for the local area over the years to come.”

The site is well served by public transport and is close to Prestwich Town Centre which provides a range of shops, services and amenities to serve both the new housing and potential new businesses.

That end of Prestwich ( Sedgley Park) is so run down, of late, and needs the boost…Is just a few minutes up the road from Deansgate and a great location.

Prestwich has declined due to the total neglect of Bury council. There are beautiful Victorian houses five minutes walk from the grotty shops, which sell for half a million pounds. This is welcome, but Prestwich needs more than the odd, development like this. It should be the best place to live in North Manchester, as it is one of the greenest places in Greater Manchester. Bury New Road is a congested rat run. If you want to see where the money from Prestwich council tax goes, just look at Bury town centre.
