Broadband contract awarded

Penrith-based specialist consultancy Commendium has won a £2.5m contract to encourage take-up of broadband among small businesses in Cumbria.

Cumbria County Council is in the final stages of securing a supplier to maximise the coverage of superfast broadband across Cumbria with the aim that at least 90% of properties are able to receive speeds in excess 30 megabytes/second. The project is known as Connecting Cumbria.

The infrastructure roll-out is due to start in spring 2013 and finish by the end of 2014.

This separate 30-month contract for Commedium is to deliver a business support programme aimed at stimulating the take up of superfast broadband services and ensuring eligible small businesses across Cumbria take full advantage of its benefits.

Connecting Cumbria is funded by European Regional Development Fund.
