Blackpool Promenade flats approved after numbers cut

The two floors directly above the Albert and Lion pub can be redeveloped into 24 flats after revised plans cut 41 apartments from the original proposal.

Plans lodged in January by Blackpool Global, a vehicle of Nottingham-based Gape Equity, sought consent for the redevelopment of the five upper floors within the Promenade building into 65 flats.

However, after discussions with the council about natural light and the lawfulness of converting three of the floors, the proposal has been significantly scaled back.

With Blackpool Council’s approval, the first and second floors can be converted into 17 one-bed flats and seven two-bed flats.

The apartments will be offered to a mix of single occupants and couples or groups, according to planning documents.

Sports Direct was the last occupier of the 75,000 sq ft space that sits underneath Blackpool Tower on Blackpool Promenade, but left more than a year ago.

Not a good sign if there isn’t any demand for a leisure/tourist use right next to the Tower, probably the best spot in town – the application suggests these aren’t even meant for AirBnB but rather permanent residents, somewhere that seems for from ideal for this.
Not that the planners can do much given it’s prior approval rather than a full application…
