Blackpool Airport set for £10m Energy HQ

Blackpool & The Fylde College has been granted planning permission for the Lancashire Energy HQ, a training facility for the energy sector, set to be the flagship development within the Enterprise Zone at Blackpool Airport.

The HQ will be built on the site of the existing airport terminal building and car park, which has been bought from airport owner Balfour Beatty.

IBI Group is the architect.

The terminal will be demolished and rebuilt closer to the runway.

Around £6.2m of Lancashire Growth Deal money has been allocated to the scheme, and the overall development cost is £9.8m.

Start on site is scheduled for summer 2016, and completion is expected in autumn 2017.

Blackpool Airport ceased to operate regular flights in October 2014, but continues to support a number of specialist operators and private aviation activities.

The airport was awarded Enterprise Zone status at the end of last year, bringing tax breaks for new occupiers and fast-tracked planning.

Daryl Platt, executive director of commercial development at Blackpool & Fylde College, said: “This is great news for Lancashire and the industries we will be supporting. Our aim is to provide a cutting-edge learning environment producing job-ready students who are highly skilled in advanced engineering, technology and energy solutions.

“The college already has a proven reputation in this field. Fleetwood Nautical Campus has more than 20 years of experience working with both on and off-shore energy sectors. The Lancashire Energy HQ will build on this, adding green and renewable energy technology to the provision offered.
