Blackpool Airport expansion continues with five fresh hangars

The council’s outline plans to construct the hangars for aviation use and one 5,000 sq ft commercial unit have been green-lit, and full consent has also been granted an access road at the 356-acre Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.

Each of the two larger hangars will span roughly 61,500 sq ft and be capable of storing two planes. They will be sited alongside each other at the northern boundary of the 20-acre plot off Amy Johnson Way.

The three smaller hangars, roughly 20,600 sq ft each, will sit along the site’s eastern boundary south of the commercial unit at the turn-off from Amy Johnson Way onto the approved access road.

Each hangar will have parking and hardstanding to enable movement of the aircraft onto the existing runways to the site’s west.

The second part of the hybrid application was given full consent for the construction of the site’s access road west off Amy Johnson Way.

A car park will provide 173 spaces for both storage for a local car dealership and airport parking.

Blackpool Council submitted the hybrid application for the scheme with planner Cassidy + Ashton.

The scale and design of the hangars have not yet been finalised, but the application states that parameters have been set by the size of the largest aeroplane to be stored in the hangar.

Blackpool Council believes the commercial opportunity will be “prominent” and “sought-after” given its location and potential to support a high-yield operator.

Most of the site is in Fylde’s administrative jurisdiction, with only highway and drainage works being located within the Blackpool boundary, therefore, the project required the consent of the local authority to proceed.

The land off Amy Johnson Way has been subject to a slew of shed and hangar applications, with applicants keen to take advantage of the airport’s economic potential.

Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone is expected to attract more than £300m of private sector investment, create 5,000 jobs, and generate a GVA of more than £2bn over its 25-year lifetime.
