Bids open for £12m Lancaster Uni project

Lancaster University is seeking a contractor to deliver the redevelopment of the Spine, the principal pedestrian walkway on the university’s Bailrigg campus.

A design team led by Rick Mather Architects was appointed in November 2014 to work on plans to rejuvenate the Spine and transform it into an “inspirational space where people learn, work, live and socialise”.

The winning bid was put forward by Rick Mather in conjunction with Grant Associates, Eckersley O’Callaghan, Mott MacDonald and DHA Lighting.

The Spine provides a continuous pedestrian walkway for students, staff and visitors running the length of the Lancaster University campus. Part of the original 1960s design, the Spine gives a partially covered route giving access to the principal academic buildings along with retail and service facilities

The university is due to start on site in July 2016 following the appointment of a contractor. According to tender documents, the aim is “to remodel and upgrade the Spine to provide a vibrant, light, safe, weather protected route, offering a variety of environments along its length, reinforcing its identity as the main campus thoroughfare”.

It is yet to be decided whether the project would be delivered over one or two phases, subject to funding.

The deadline for receipt of tenders is 8 February 2016.
