Bellway’s Leigh garden centre proposals take root

The volume housebuilder wants to knock down Moss Bank Nurseries off Hooten Lane and construct 158 homes.

Under proposals lodged with Wigan Council, Bellway would demolish the existing garden centre buildings, which take up around a quarter of the 11-acre site, to make way for a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom houses and apartments.

Of these, 15% will be available on affordable tenures, and each home will come with an electric vehicle charging point.

The site, allocated by Wigan Council as safeguarded – but not in the Green Belt – is identified in the draft Greater Manchester spatial plan, Places for Everyone, as being capable to accommodate 192 homes.

Pre-application discussions between Bellway and Wigan Council saw the developer’s original 163-home plan scaled back slightly to the 158-home scheme that has now been lodged.

Pegasus is advising Bellway on planning.

Disgusting stop building more and more houses.

By Angela Hamer

Just wondering what the owners of the garden business think? I have used this place for years. Yet more houses with no clear plans for additional infrastructure to support extra cars and families.
Sad to see any business disappear.

By JULIE JORGENSEN

The local infrastructure can not take anymore with all the housing in the last couple of years. We haven’t the schools or medical facilities ie Hospital/Doctors surgeries. Stop it for gods sake.

By Michael Lucas

So has anyone considered the school .the one road in is absolutely disgraceful.

By John Beckett

Millions of people can’t afford to rent or buy their own homes. Homelessness is at record levels. We’re not building enough homes Angela

How will they access the East Lancs? Greyhound Island is already a nightmare in the morning.

So we build more of the things that increasingly people can’t afford to rent or buy? That’s the argument is it.? More affordable homes and fewer people that’s the answer.

By Anonymous

Wigan awful council need to realise building multiple houses causes more traffic. The road infrastructure in leigh awful and its becoming worse every year. Concentrate on road and public transport and maybe get a new town planner because the one in place useless

By Duncan Hall

More and more plans for housing estates approved. But please, where are the plans to improve the infrastructure to support the increased population. People need homes but give them a good community to live in too. What’s the point of having beautiful housing if there are no schools, doctors, or shops to support the community. What’s the point of having beautiful housing if you can’t get in and out of the estate for the traffic!

How dare they do this to Moss Bank Nursery. I have been filling my garden with their plants for many years. I have been today to order 7 hanging baskets. and buy other plants This must not happen.

Leigh, well on the way to being one big housing estate. 👎👎👎

Dreadful- a fantastic service to the community being taken away for yet more housing, surely Leigh is at saturation point- the congestion is making Leigh a no go area , please please do not approve this plan

By Hilary

Absolutely stupid. Building homes on the little green land that there is in this part of the borough is bad enough, but the associated traffic without any kind of planning will cause even more gridlock than ever.

By Gunner

Leigh and the surrounding roads just can not take anymore people or associated traffic. Please, please put all the thousands properties in the area that lie empty, back to use.

By Sue Ward

Why knock down businesses when there is other land to build on. previous application always says job opportunities, this seems to be ignored.

By Barbara Leigh

Comments should be closed due to NIMBYism take over. Same old comments used every time there is ever any development in any town in the country. Infrastructure, roads, schools, GP surgeries. Same old copy and paste job. The country is on it knees for housing stock. NIMBYs search the Oxford dictionary, there is a definition for you in there.

By MoreHousing

Don’t need anymore houses access on to Warrington road will be a nightmare

Too many houses now in leigh .our roads can not cope. It is unfair on the local wildlife.

By Saunders Julie

Some people seem to think that Moss Bank Nurseries are being kicked off. They are selling their land to Bellway!
