Barrow’s Harding House to host BAE Systems training centre

The aerospace giant has had a change of use application to use the 14,000 sq ft building as offices and training rooms approved.

Under plans put to Westmorland and Furness Council via DLP Planning, BAE wants to use 75% of the building for educational purposes, while the remaining 25% would be used as offices.

Located on a two-acre site off Harding Rise, Harding House was built by the council in 2020 before quickly turning into a COVID testing centre.

Since the pandemic, it has only been used occasionally as an office.

Training will be done in classrooms and will be paper based, according to the planning statement, so there will be no need for workshops.

An existing multi-purpose area can double as a canteen and collaboration space.

No structural alterations have been proposed, and the internal arrangement of spaces will not be altered. Xpressive Interiors will lead on any interior redesign.

In addition, the 87-space car park will not be changed.

The neighbouring plot along Ramsay Way is home to BAE’s logistics centre.

Those interested in the application can view it on Westmorland and Furness Council’s planning portal using the reference number B12/2024/0512.
