Bam set for £41m Salford Royal trauma centre

The contractor is understood to be working with Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust to deliver the specialist treatment centre, which secured funding from then-Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in 2017.

Salford Royal is currently the main receiving site for the Greater Manchester Major Trauma Service, and handles high-risk surgery for North West Greater Manchester, as well as dealing with emergency cases and serious injuries.

The proposed 115,000 sq ft, three-storey centre is set to include a resuscitation area, five emergency theatres, critical care beds, and diagnostic imaging, as well as a helipad. It will be built on a site next to the hospital’s existing Hope Building, which was completed by Balfour Beatty in 2011.

Bam has been working with the hospital through the P22 framework to deliver the scheme; initially, work was set to begin at the end of 2018 and complete next year, but is now likely to begin in early 2020 with a two-year build process. The construction cost is understood to be around £41m and a business case was approved last year. Once complete, the facility is set to serve 90% of all major trauma patients in Greater Manchester.

Day Architectural is working on the design with Bam.

In July 2017, then-Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens announced Salford Royal would receive £48m from the Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships fund for its trauma centre services; of this, £41m will be invested in the new-build project.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust was contacted for comment. Bam confirmed it was working with the Trust when contacted by Place North West.
